When I first heard of Cynic as of a band that combines such dissimilar styles as death metal and jazz fusion, I started wishing to listen to this band very much. Actually I don't like death metal, but its combination with fusion really intrigued me. In addition, I knew that Sean Malone, the originator of prog rock project Gordian Knot, was a member of Cynic playing bass-guitar. As I liked Gordian Knot very much, this fact only inflamed my interest. Of course, at the first opportunity I have listened to their album "Focus" and have been completely satisfied with it. What I have to say, Cynic is no ordinary death metal band. Their style can be classified as progressive death metal with great technical skills of the musicians. If you like death metal, you should listen to it. If you like prog metal, you also should listen to it. If you like jazz fusion... well, you may listen to it, too.
