Keeper of the Seven Keys (1987)

Helloween

Rock

This is a greatest album of the power metal band from Germany. Helloween specializes in blistering melodic heavy metal with a strong gothic orientation. Their music influenced by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. "Keeper of the Seven Keys" is the classical work of the power metal: very fast drumming, melodic and technical riffs with fabulous twin-guitar solos by Kai Hansen and Michael Weikath, and, of course, magnificent vocal of 18 years old Michael Kiske. My favorite track is the long (over 13 minutes) epic song "Halloween". All other tracks are also very good, but I think that "Halloween" mirrors the spirit of this album completely.

Don't Tread on Me (2005)

311

Rock

This is my first time listening to an interesting american band 311, which performs a kind of alternative rock with perceptible reggae influences on this album. The title track "Don't Tread on Me", in fact, is almost reggae, but the one performed with a harder sound, which, however, doesn't contain any overdriven elements. Other tracks are also remind of reggae, and only fifth track "Solar Flare" represents a kind of rap & rock mix, which sounds a bit agressively against the rest of the album. In my opinion, this album may be interesting to anyone who likes merry alternative music. Personally I consider this album excellent for listening to in headphones as background music during the working time.

The Sky Moves Sideways [Remastered] (2004)

Porcupine Tree

Rock

This album is a remastered 2 CD edition of the original "The Sky Moves Sideways" album released in 1995, when Porcupine Tree was a young project of Steven Wilson, and not many people outside London ever heard of it. Those days Steven was a true experimentalist who often tried to merge electronic influences of The Future Sound of London with psychedelic soloing guitar of the '70s. Such kind of music is represented on this album with the title track "The Sky Moves Sideways Phase 1", where guitar and flute solos interlace with pronounced techno sound (alternate version contains also a female vocal). As a whole, this is a great album, which, however, may be found disappointing by fans of late Steven's works.

Volume 1: Sound Magic (1996)

Afro Celtic Sound System

World

Afro Celtic Sound System is not well-known but very innovative band that performs exciting music. "Volume 1: Sound Magic" is a mix of celtic misic with electronica, which also contains ethnic tunes of other nations. As a result I found some kind of jumble, which is more than pleasant for hearing. It absolutely doesn't strain, all compositions united as they were selected for relaxing massage by a doctor. So I'm getting a comfortable place, lighting the scented candles... "Relaxing massage, please".

Salon Oriental: Oriental Downtempo Escapade (2002)

Various Artists

Electronica

It seems that this week is my week of ethnic music. "Salon Oriental: Oriental Downtempo Escapade" is ethnic music with asian bias. I might say, this is a hybrid of western electronic music an asian tunes. The hybrid is skilful enough: an asian part sounds very sincerely, and electronica appears only as gilding, which decorates the background. The result is simply outstanding, without any excesses. It's like I'm at 25th floor of Long Beach Garden again, drinking my beer and thoughtfully looking at the ocean.

Lifes Rich Pageant (1986)

R.E.M.

Rock

"Lifes Rich Pageant" is probably the best R.E.M.'s album. This work is different from all previous their albums: it demonstrates that R.E.M.'s sound becomes harder. The album starts with "Begin the Begin", one of the R.E.M.'s heaviest songs. This track lets you know exactly what you are going to hear during the next forty minutes. Really, all the tracks from this album are quite rocking with usual jingle-jangle feeling of the early years. "Begin the Begin", "The Flowers of Guatemala", "I Believe", and "Swan Swan H" are my favorite tracks. It doesn't mean that I don't like other tracks, but I just really like the foregoing songs.
