Lovedrive (1979)ScorpionsRock I think "Loverdrive" is the best Scorpions' album. The band performs melodious hard rock with elements of heavy metal: speed and energetic tracks alternate with beautiful lyrical ballads. This album was a breaking point of the former Scorpions sound: this is the first album with new lead guitarist Matthias Jabs who have replaced Uli Jon Roth, and the second one with Michael Schenker who was available after leaving UFO. That was a transitional period for the band, but, however, it haven't became a barrier to record a good album. Authorship of most tracks on this album belongs to Rudolf Schenker (music) and Klaus Meine (lyrics). Among my favorite tracks are "Loving You Sunday Morning", "Another Piece of Meat", "Can't Get Enough" and "Lovedrive".
Side Two (2005)Adrian BelewProgressive Rock 2005 was a quite productive year for Adrian Belew: half an year later the release of "Side One" another great album "Side Two" has been released. Unlike previous "Side One", there are no big guest apperances on this album (the previous one was recorded in collaboration with two major rock stars - Les Claypool of Primus and Danny Carey of Tool). Another distinguishing feature of this album is appearance of synthesized elements, generally in rhythm section, on most of tracks. But regardless of the fact that the music has slightly electronic sound, I can't say it sounds poorly. On the contrary, all these loops and synthesized drums in combination with Adrian's creaking and cacophonous guitar have only intensified an atmosphere of the music. I can say with confidence that I haven't ever listened to anything similar to this album. Don't miss it!
Ghost Reveries (2005)OpethMetal After the calm and acoustic album "Damnation" released in 2003, the musicians of Opeth have returned back to metal. On this album the band shows how close its musicians have came up to progressive metal, and if Mikael Akerfeldt wouldn't sing with brutal voice on this album, "Ghost Reveries" might be the sample of what true progressive metal should actually be. The major difference of this album from the previous ones is an appearance of keyboard parts everywhere on the album. This is the first Opeth's album recorded with keyboardist Per Wiberg, who became an actual member of the band not long ago. I don't know how the old Opeth fans regard to this new member, but personally I'm very glad that such musicians as Opeth keep searching for new ways of music performance with every new their album.
Music Detected (2002)Deep ForestElectronica "Music Detected" is an unexpected turn in creative work of this band. Samples are gone to the background, and forefront is made of lyrics and "live" instruments here. This is a melodic and light album, which brings only positive emotions. If earlier Deep Forest were generally directed to the West, "Music Detected" became an album that has expanded musical bounds of the band to the entire world. This album contains sounds of instruments from four different sides of the globe as well as vocals of four performers (Beverly, Angela, Anggun and Chitose) whose voices interflow in ideal harmony. "Music Detected" is a maelstrom of the positive energy in combination with talents of Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez - two dreamers whose music fascinates me with rhythms of Utopia.
Forever Autumn (1999)Lake Of TearsRock This is a wonderful album by Lake Of Tears, a gothic rock band with some influences of doom. "Forever Autumn" is an appropriate and successful interpretation of the picture of autumn, it's calm and melancholic. This music contains everything that touches me: sad and air-tearing violin (it makes music much atmospheric), firm guitar chords, wonderful keyboard passages, and emotional vocal. All these components together create an amazing atmosphere of slight sadness and endless autumn. This album doesn't contain any middling tracks, I've listened to it with bated breath. Design of the album is very much concerned with album theme, it supplements music with some visual elements, and I think this is a great plus to this work. "Forever Autumn" is a sad, unhurried, athmospheric, and simply beautiful music.
Odin (2003)WizardHeavy Metal Unfortunately, I never heard of this power metal band from Germany before. Their music is similar to Helloween, Rhapsody, Judas Priest, and Manovar: speed guitar passages (Michael Maas), powerful rhythm section (Voler Leson - bass, Snoppi Van Heek - drums) and pushing male vocal (Sven D'Anna). "Odin" is a conceptual album. Its conception is based on the Norse mythology: it's a tale about a supreme god of wisdom and war. Classical combination of myths and power metal music gives very good result. In my opinion, "Odin" is well-worked album and I would like to recommend it to everybody who likes music of this genre.
