Salisbury (1971)Uriah HeepRock Uriah Heep is one of the best bands of the '70s. Their second album is a blend of heavy metal and progressive rock. Highlights of this album include three songs: "Bird of Prey", "The Park" and "Lady in Black". "Bird of Prey" is an excellent rock composition with incredible guitar riffs of Mick Box and wonderful Ian Gillan-styled vocal of David Byron. "The Park" is a melodious progressive ballad. There are no masterly guitar passages or power drums on it, just David Byron's voice, Ken Hensley's organ, an acoustic guitar and a beautiful melody. "Lady in Black" is a classic song of Uriah Heep, which has only two chords in it, but it sounds splendidly. Highly recommended.
Time (1981)Electric Light OrchestraRock Last week I felt myself tired of power chords and metal riffs, so I decided to listen to something light this week. After some searches for soft kind of music, I chose Electric Light Orchestra, a band I hadn't really listened to in the past. Earlier I heard of ELO as of extraordinary musicians with a great potential. They were one of the first bands who incorporated symphonic elements into their music playing such classical instruments as violins and cellos, and this fact seemed very interesting to me. "Time" is the first album by ELO I have reached and listened to, and I've been very much amazed and fascinated with their music and performance manner containing some elements of disco and Smokie-like melodies. It turned out that I listened to one the songs from this album before, but just didn't know it was by ELO. This song is "Here Is the News" and it is my favorite from this album.
Side One (2005)Adrian BelewProgressive Rock Adrian Belew, one of the most underrated guitarists of the present, was a member of many famous rock bands in the past. Among the musicians he worked with are King Crimson, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads, and many others. His guitar solo performed on Porcupine Tree's "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" is undoubtedly the best part of their recent "Deadwing" album. So even before I got this album, I knew I'll certainly like it. I was right, "Side One" is a really good album. Adrian is a musician with his personal, distinctive style of playing guitar, and I really like that leisurely, low-pitched and creaking sound, which Adrian takes out of his instrument. His music is not allied to the one of such guitar virtuoso as Satriani or Vai (whom I don't actually like much), but anyway Belew is a true master of guitar who, moreover, has discovered his own style.
Lushlife (2000)Bowery ElectricRock This is just another work of Lawrence Chandler and Martha Schwendener, the members of Bowery Electric. This duo are real masters of mood creation with all its variety. "Lushlife" is a story of night city, fast blinking of light blurs in the rain; a story of sadness, motion and emptiness; a story of human loneliness and life fleeting in the centre of cold urban aesthetics. Hip-hop beat, drum loops, guitar passages, outstanding vocals, and aesthetic spirituality - all of this is called "Lushlife". Everything is simple and ideal. The perfect music for rainy night megalopolis, reflexion of everything around you. Truly and heartfelt. High-rated.
Pacifique (2000)Deep ForestElectronica Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez present us a wonderful album full of ethnic musical spitits of Caribbean Islands. The music of nature and relaxing rhythms are a trademark sound of Deep Forest, which is represented on this album as a sound of the ocean on a title composition "Pacifique" and a calmness of the village on "Night Village". Dynamic and dark "La revolte", which is full of Jean Michelle Jarre-styled electronica, smoothly turns into melodic and calm "Le baiser". This album harmoniously combines live sounds with electronic compositions saturated with spirits of paradise islands. For instance, "Ouverture Huahine" is almost a true trip-hop. If you knew Deep Forest as a band performing only relaxing ethnic music, this album would be a pleasant surprise for you.
Verfall (1996)IlluminateGothic "Verfall" is a debut album from the German gothic band Illuminate. Illuminate was founded in 1993 by Johannes Berthold and very soon became an important part of the German wave and gothic scene. Illuminate's music is a mix of gothic and electronic sound. It is more similar to music performed by Inkubus Sukkubus than that by Lacrimosa. Combination of male and female vocals adds a freshness and originality to this album. I like it and I think that this album could be recommended to everybody who likes light gothic music. "Verfall" is a first part of trilogy, which includes the second ("Erinnerungen"1997) and the third ("Erwachen" 1998) albums of the band, and I'm going to listen to them in the near future.
