Light + Shade (2005)

Mike Oldfield

New Age

"Light + Shade" is just another work of Mike Oldfield. This album is performed in New Age style, so it's thoughtful and extensive. "Light + Shade" consists of two discs: the first of them corresponds to "Light" (something kind, bright and beautiful, although it isn't such beautiful as it might be), the second one corresponds to "Shade" (a shadow and intensity, which are done by Mike much better). At that these albums are almost the same. The only difference is that compositions become more energetic when they are closer to the "Shade" side: some compositions appear with vocals, their rhythm changes, everything becomes interesting to hear. The "Light" side is a bit simple-minded and faceless. But as a whole this music isn't bad, it isn't pushing or forcing you to anything. It is melodious enough and vocal is also good. "Light + Shade" is smooth for listening, and it leaves a slightly perceptible trace in the soul. Unambiguously something is missing on this album. Maybe emotionality?

The Invisible Invasion (2005)

Coral, The

Indie

The Coral were formed in 1996 in England. In 2001 they were proclaiming as the best new English band. Music of The Coral is a mix of British Psychedelia and modern folk music. Sound of The Coral is similar to such bands as Franz Ferdinand and The Libertines. "The Invisible Invasion" has made a positive impression on me: all the songs are quite melodious, easy for listening and optimistic. Among my favorite tracks are "She Sings the Mourning", "Cripples Crown" and "In the Morning". In two words - "The Invisible Invasion" is a good and very interesting work, in my opinion.

Under Cover (2005)

Ozzy Osbourne

Rock

Ozzy Osbourne has issued an album of cover songs. Over years Ozzy has been a heavy metal legend and Black Sabbath's voice, so most of us expected to hear something similar to his previous works on this album. "Under Cover" discouraged most of Ozzy fans: 14 cover versions for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, King Crimson, and others. I do not delight with this work because among these 14 tracks only one has attracted my attention. It is the cover for The Beatles "In My Life" - a very interesting interpretation. As a whole I don't like this album, and sometimes I think that Ozzy has recorded it only for his own pleasure.

Awake (1994)

Dream Theater

Progressive Metal

Listening to "Awake" periodically for about last three years, I keep considering this album as the most successful Dream Theater's work behind another brilliant album "Scenes from a Memory". Released in 1994, "Awake" is very different (in my opinion, much better) from its predecessor "Images and Words". The things that attract attention are better sound quality, more efficient performance (most of all this regards to Mike Portnoy, one of the best drummers in the world at the present), and well thought-out arrangements. Even at my first listening I estimated this album as a real break-through of Dream Theater to the top of prog metal scene. The trilogy "A Mind Beside Itself" is a true all-time masterpiece of progressive metal. Unfortunately, this album became the last work of Dream Theater with an outstanding keyboardist Kevin Moore, who left the band to begin his solo career in 1994 (later Kevin became the originator of Chroma Key project). If you still haven't listened to "Awake", I advise you to do it right now!

Mosquito (1994)

Psychotic Waltz

Progressive Metal

Psychotic Waltz is american progressive metal band, which currently is splitted-up and doesn't release new albums since 1994. Thus, "Mosquito" is their last album. As far as I understood, Psychotic Waltz has never been a widely known band, so I didn't expect anything special from this album when I got it for listening. However, I listened to "Mosquito" with pleasure and got satisfied with it. At least I liked Psychotic Waltz much better than Fates Warning, whose album I reviewed a week ago. This album is a bit monotonous, but some parts of it are interesting enough. "Lovestone Blind" and "Shattered Sky" are the tracks I like the best on this album. The second of them drew my attention because of a flute (!) appearance. I can't remember if I listened to any metal composition performed with use of flute before, but I like how this is done by Psychotic Waltz. In other words, I can say I like this album and I'm going to search for other works by Psychotic Waltz in the near future.

666 (1971)

Aphrodite's Child

Electronic

This is the best and, unfortunately, the final album from very interesting art-rock band from Greece. "666" is an attempt to present the Apocalypse of St. John (Book of Revelation) as a rock spectacle. This album is an excellent display of sound, mystery and creative art. It is a classical progressive rock work where many modern musicians are still finding an inspiration. The bandleader Vangelis shines on this album as a producer and composer. The album sounds very jazzy, very edgy, sometimes pedantic, but always freshly. I've listened to this album with pleasure, and if you like progressive/art rock scene, you will enjoy hearing this album, too.
