Am I Not Your Girl? (1992)

Sinead O'Connor

Vocal

The third Sinead's album is different from two previous her works. What will you hear on this album? Mix some grandiose orchestration with sultry but so soothing vocal, add some longing, heartbreak and persistent hope, spice it with seducing charm, and you will get "Am I Not Your Girl?". This album contains 12 songs, which were performed by different artist in different times: "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" (Joan Baez, Donna Summer), "I Want to Be Loved by You" (Marilyn Monroe), and others. Sinead conveys an exquisite blend of emotions with her better "breathy" voice from the childish joy in "Secret Love" to the sweet melancholy in "Gloomy Sunday". I very like this album and I want to recommend it to everybody who likes excellent vocal in combination with jazz influenced arrangements.

Up the Downstair (1993)

Porcupine Tree

Progressive Rock

I often compare Porcupine Tree to Radiohead, even though their music doesn't sound similarly. When I listen to Porcupine Tree, especially for such their album as "Stupid Dream" or "In Absentia", I feel the same moods as of listening to Radiohead of their pre-"Kid A" period. But unlike Radiohead, Porcupine Tree is not widely known band. And the reason of that is their non-commercial approach to music creation. "Up the Downstair" was released in 1993, in the dawn of BritPop era, and everything that young people wanted to listen to at that time was alternative rock in all its variety. However, "Up the Downstair" presents completely different kind of music. Being quite unusual and experimental by its nature, this album constitutes one of the best samples of psychedelic rock I ever listened to in the rest of my life. This album is absolutely non-commercial (not many people were interested in psychedelic rock in the mid of the 90's), but this fact only does the album better. I consider "Up the Downstair" as the best early work of Porcupine Tree, a masterpiece of progressive psychedelia, but anyway I like their late albums better.

Pablo Honey (1993)

Radiohead

Experimental Rock

I clearly remember the moment when I first heard Radiohead's "Creep", the song that made Radiohead one of the most important bands appeared on British rock scene in the 90's. It was 1994, I sat down in my room watching MTV and suddenly I'd heard a beautiful melodious tune, which went gently and slowly at first, but at one moment it had literally blown up by multiple guitar attack, and after a short while the tune became gentle again. That was amazing! Unfortunately, it was impossible for me to get this album at that time, so I got "Pablo Honey", as well as several other Radiohead's albums (actually I got them all), only six years later. The summer of the 2000 became the time of my real addiction to Radiohead, and "Pablo Honey" was my favorite album. I never considered Radiohead as BritPop stars, but sound of this album is very close to BritPop. I think exactly this fact brought these true rock experimentalists out to alternative mainstream, the place they never actually belonged to. If you are not familiar with Radiohead yet, "Pablo Honey" would be the right place to start with them.

The Slim Shady LP (1999)

Eminem

Rap

"The Slim Shady LP" is the next to "The Slim Shady EP" album. This album is a conclusive Eminem's step to the world of rap. I might say this is Eminem's debut album, which has proved to everybody that Eminem is a true rapper, though he's white, and he'll never surrender. Of course, all this was done not without a collaboration with famous Dr. Dre - exactly his trademark beats became a typical feature of "The Slim Shady LP". This is an aggressive album full of furious and cruel lyrics, which claim that Eminem just insonifies thoughts of his character - Slim Shady. If this is a parody or not, but lyrics of such song as "97 Bonnie & Clyde" (it contains words about the murder of mother of his child), as well as frequent wordy attacks on his own mother, were considered by many as absolutely irresponsible. Songs "My Name Is" and "Guilty Conscience" raise this album to the top of charts, and in March of 1999 the album reached the second place in american album chart. "The Slim Shady LP" is a serious and wicked album that reflects the cruel reality of Slim Shady, and this fact gives a strong emotionality to this album.

The Massacre (2005)

50 cent

Rap

The second album by 50 Cent "The Massacre" looks like remembrances of the criminal firearm past. "The Massacre" is quite colorful gangster album, which is full of sex, wild nights and not less wild rumbles. On "The Massacre" the rapper shows his irrepressible artistry and quite respective sense of humour. Songs on this album are accompanied by a quantity of outside sounds: retorts aside, cricket's chirr, hammer clicks, shots, screaming, etc. This is the game with million strong stakes and sometimes with a risk of life. A romanticism, in a word. "The Massacre" is insonified rap comics, humorous ballad of gangster life, which is luxurious and dangerous at the same time. This is a quite good album, but not as good as "Get Rich or Die Tryin'", however.

The Animatrix Album (2003)

Various Artists

Soundtrack

As in case of The Matrix movie and all its sequels, Animatrix soundtrack has been released on a separate CD named "The Animatrix Album". All music on this album, except of the last two bonus tracks, appears in some scenes of the movie. This is absolutely fascinating, energetic album with varied music of different styles: from mysterious first track "Who Am I" (just cool!) to pseudo-electro-jazzy "Blind Tiger" and pretty hard "Hands Around My Throat". "Conga Fury" reminds me a bit of "Burly Brawl" from "The Matrix Reloaded". It's also worth to mension a track "Supermoves", which corresponds to the action of Animatrix very well. The movie and its soundtrack complete each other with amazing harmony. "The Animatrix Album" is a mysterious album full of inexplicable secrets, which immerses you into the deep of emotions and impressions. This is a perfect thing, or maybe it's just from another time. My choice of the week unambiguously!
