Aftermath (1966)Rolling Stones, TheRock "Aftermath" is the first Stones' work that entirely consists of their original songs. All compositions are written by Jagger and Richards. This album initiated a brief departure of the Stones from blues-influenced pop songs and started their new period of better songwriting and arrangements. "Aftermath" teems with great songs: "Mother's Little Helper" (one of my favorite Stones songs), "Stupid Girl", "Lady Jane", "Under My Thumb", and others. I'm slightly disappointed with "Goin' Home" - it could have been a pretty decent three-minute song, but the Stones decided to stretch it to over eleven. Overall, Jagger's and Richards' songwriting shines. | |
A Celtic Journey (1998)Medwyn GoodallCeltic This is an even and calm album that perfectly suits for the rest-time and relaxation. Light tunes with ethnical inclusions give a rest to tired brains and launch thoughts to a hover. This album produces absolutely positive associations - green fields and leaves, loquacious brooks, a warm breeze. Or maybe I'm just tired of winter and waiting for summer? Anyway, it's a wonderful album. | |
Push the Button (2005)Chemical Brothers, TheElectronica "Push the Bottom" confirms the status of Chemical Brothers as one of the best bands in electronic music world. Like ten years ago, they keep releasing great hits combining the most incommensurable musical genres and styles. This duo are real music experimentalists, and this their new album exceeds any stylistic limits. "Push the Button" is well thought-out and complete Chemical Brothers' work. | |
12 Stories Down (2004)Pineapple ThiefProgressive Rock When I listened to Pineapple Thief for the first time, they appear to me as such a kind of Radiohead imitation, but with more acoustic and simplified sound. As I read later, people really compare Pineapple Thief to Radiohead - this band is often classified as an average of Radiohead and Porcupine Tree. Well, I really like both of foregoing bands, but in my opinion Pineapple Thief is too boring to be compared with them. I have listened to "12 Stories Down" several times, but found only a couple of songs that I can call "interesting". The rest is complete boredom. A pity. | |
Damnation (2003)OpethMetal Regardless of the fact that Opeth was formed in 1990 as death metal band, "Damnation" is their absolutely metal-free album. This Swedish band always stood aside of mainstream and was strongly attracted by progressive metal, but this album exceeds all my expectations. Actually this is not purely Opeth's work, but their collaboration with Steven Wilson, a leader of Porcupine Tree, and I'm sure that exactly Steven's influence made this album sounding so gently and purely, without metal riffs and brutal vocals. I consider "Damnation" a really successful result of such extraordinary collaboration. | |
The Forgotten Tales (1996)Blind GuardianRock Blind Guardian is a power metal band formed in 1986 in Germany. "The Forgotten Tales" is not typical their album. It is a collection of covers and alternate versions. Original tracks have been reworked into acoustic and orchestral arrangements. The first track "Mr. Sandman" (The Chordettes cover) starts out gently and ends as full blown speed metal. It is quite unexpected, but sounds great. Among my favorite tracks are "Spread Your Wings" (Queen cover), "The Bard's Song" and "Barbara Ann / Long Tall Sally" (Beach Boys cover). I think this album will hold the interest of most progressive/speed metal fans. | |
