Waiting for the Moon (2003)TindersticksRock Tindersticks are one of the most original and distinctive British bands of the '90s. Their works are standing apart from both of the British indie scene and the rash of Brit-pop guitar combos. Some people compare Tindersticks with Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. "Waiting for the Moon" is their last work. The most of tracks from this album are performed in melodious and unhurried manner with pronounced string section: acoustic guitar, violin, etc. "Until the Morning Comes", "Sometime It Hurts" (elegant duet with Lhasa de Sala), "My Oblivion" and "Running Wild" are my favorites. This is a good album, I'm pleased.
Das Boot (1992)U96Electronica I listened to U96 when I studied in college, and today, ten years ago, I decided to listen to it again. And I'm not disappointed with it. This music has its special moods, which are exceptionally peculiar to U96. These moods sometimes are melancholy and dreamy, a bit away of this world, but sometimes they are shrill or even harsh. I feel this album deeply after ten years, and I listen to it with a great pleasure.
Computer Welt (1981)KraftwerkElectronica There are many songs of love and other human relations in the world, but there are some of computers. And the second ones are performed by German electronic band Kraftwerk. As the first computers were made, Kraftwerk musicians said computers are the future, computers will be used everywhere. And they released their "Computer World", which had a great influence upon electronic music in the rest of the world. It's a true innovation, a novelty (at that time, of course) expressed in simple tunes.
Suspended Animation (2005)John PetrucciInstrumental Rock Dream Theater's guitarist John Petrucci is one of the most outstanding guitar heros today. His easily recognizable style of playing guitar is an essential part of Dream Theater's "firm" sound. I like this musician very much, that's why I slightly disappointed with his long-awaited solo album. "Suspended Animation" appears to me as an expressionless, monotonous set of tracks, which, however, demonstrates high guitar skills of John. Not bad, nothing more.
Frances the Mute (2005)Mars Volta, ThePsychedelic Rock The Mars Volta are the brand-new rock experimentalists from California, and "Frances the Mute" is their second album. I would make no secret that I like this bright and quite impressive album very much. Most tracks of this album are performed in original manner with jazz, latin and highly noticeable (surprise!) psychedelic influences. Only one thing kept me from rating this album higher - this music is a little bit tiresome. In my opinion, of course.
Into the Electric Castle (1998)AyreonProgressive Metal This is probably the best album of Ayreon, an Arjen Lucassen's project that unites a number of rock stars playing their roles in grand prog-metal opera. Being classified as progressive metal project, Ayreon doesn't actually sound too heavy, so it may be recommended even to persons who don't listen to metal seriously. I haven't listened to the recent Ayreon's "The Human Equation" yet (I suspect it's much better), but anyway I consider "Into the Electric Castle" one of the best Lucassen's works and a good place to start with Ayreon.
