Wishmaster (2000)NightwishRock This is the third album of the finest opera-style metal band from Finland. Powerful sound of guitar, bass, keyboard and drums combined with the symphonic female vocal of Tarja Turunen. This combination allows Nightwish to create a very melodic, epic and romantic atmosphere with their music. Among my favorites tracks are "She Is My Sin", "Two For Tragedy" and, of course, "Wishmaster". As a whole, this album sounds freshly and originally for the metal realm, and it is one of my favorite albums.
Murder Ballads (1996)Nick Cave and The Bad SeedsRock Nick Cave has been writing songs about killing and other evil things since 1980, when he participated in Birthday Party. Some people compare his vocal style with vocal style of Jim Morrison. Murder Ballads is a fascinating conceptual album. "Stagger Lee" and "Henry Lee" are narrative ballad form of the English folk tradition. "Where The Wild Roses Grow" is a narrative duet in which a killer (Nick Cave) and a victim (Kylie Minogue) reveal their tales. All tracks from this album are great. Recommended for listening.
Fate of a Dreamer (2002)AmbeonProgressive Metal Ambeon is a project by Dutch multi-instrumentalist and composer Arjen Lucassen, who also known as an author of Ayreon, a famous space opera performed in prog metal style. Unlike Ayreon albums, "Fate of a Dreamer" is a story of a single character taken from previous Ayreon's "Universal Migrator" and performed by Astrid van der Veen. It's a good album, but, however, I like Ayreon much better than Ambeon, generally, for its multi-role conception.
Blackfield (2005)BlackfieldProgressive Rock Blackfield is a collaboration of Porcupine Tree leader Steven Wilson and Israeli singer/songwriter Aviv Geffen. This album expresses the pronounced melancholic moods, which are similar to the moods of Porcupine Tree, but, as a whole, "Blackfield" sounds more darkly and sadly than any PT's album I've ever listened to. It's not a masterpiece, but if you like neo-progressive, it may be very interesting to you.
Liquid Tension Experiment 2 (1999)Liquid Tension ExperimentProgressive Metal Originated by Dream Theater's drummer Mike Portnoy, LTE is an instrumental prog rock/prog metal collaboration between four virtuoso musicians: drummer Mike Portnoy, guitarist John Petrucci (Dream Theater), bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson), and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (he became Dream Theater's member just after this album is released). If you like Dream Theater, but haven't listened to LTE before, this is absolute must-have for you.
Red Roses For Me (1984)Pogues, TheRock The Pogues were one of most radical bands of the mid-'80s. "Red Roses For Me" is their first album. This album demonstrates that the spirit of punk could live in the traditional Irish folk music. All tracks are good and sound rowdy funny. Most of them were written by Shane MacGowan. Also this album contains four traditional reworkings: "Waxie's Dargle", "Poor Paddy", "Greenland Whale Fisheries", and "Kitty". If you have even a drop of Irish blood in your veins, this album will make you dancing in the streets. Excellent.
